Late one night Peggy Blumquist hit a man with her car. Her husband, Ed, felt obligated to help her cover it up. Then things didn’t get better.

The body she hit belonged to Rye Gerhardt. The Gerhardt family is in the crime business, and, cousin, business is booming. A bigger fish from Kansas has taken notice and wants their piece of the North Dakota action, so you can see why the Gerhardts are already in a bad mood. Just wait until they hear about Peggy and Ed. I don’t want to get hyperbolic and start equating the crime family dynamics here to The Godfather, but I couldn’t stop seeing this bad batch as Minnesotan Corleones.

Keep an eye out for my favorite scene in episode six where Peggy (Kirsten Dunst) and Sheriff Larsson (Ted Danson) talk about a murder. Just two people in a very 1970s kitchen conversing over coffee. In a world where you can flip the channel and see dragons burning down castles, or pop over to YouTube to spend a few hours watching dudes stick fireworks down their pants, it feels good to have a quiet scene with two great actors be one of the most memorable television moments of 2015.

A season of Fargo must provide these things:

  • Snow. Lots of snow.
  • An overpowered villain with superhuman reflexes and clairvoyant criminal insight.
  • A good cop pushed to the limit.
  • One scene so completely out of left field that it almost derails the narrative.
  • Music cues borrowed from the entire Joel and Ethan Cohen filmography.
  • Industrial machinery that can easily be repurposed to grind up humans.
  • Better than feature film quality performances, directing, and screenwriting.

Season two provides.
