Drive could have easily been titled Stare. The Driver, played by Ryan Gosling, spends more time locking unblinking eyes with people than he does behind the wheel. If anyone else stared like that it would be creepy, but not when Gosling does it. Somehow, when he does it, it’s the opposite of creepy.

It might be because the Driver is just so cool.

“I don’t sit in while you’re running it down. I don’t carry a gun. I drive.”

The Driver is running away from his dangerous past, and he would have succeeded except for one small mistake—he falls for his neighbor, and dealing with her baby-daddy-drama gets him tangled up with some big time gangsters. Sometimes life is like that.

Albert Brooks plays one of those gangsters. I’ve been watching Albert Brooks movies for years and I never found him scary. He’s scary in Drive.

Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, Oscar Isaac, and Christina Hendricks(!) round out the cast of this crime film drenched in retrowave tunes, tension, and burnouts.
